Pond-builders at the community garden reflect on their work
We are proud of the pond we built as part of our pond course, led by Steven, in November. We measured the site and considered its aspect, before coming up with a design suitable for its situation in the Wildlife Area. Then, we used rope to map out its contours to give it a natural look. We kept warm digging it out – shelving the sides to create deep and shallow water wildlife habitats, as well digging a section for a bog garden. We then laid carpet and sieved sandy earth from around the site to provide a soft surface for the pond liner. Smooth round stones were collected to make a mini-beach, as a drinking platform for bees and small birds. It was then ready to fill! A stone was carefully lowered into the centre of the pond for creatures to hide under. We then all gathered round and admired our reflections! We have had the first ice on the pond just lately and Linda has been forbidden by Ric to get her skates on today!
