RHS Campaign for School Gardening

SPRING TERM - Learning and growing – the basics and beyond
Thursday 9th February 2012

Summary
This practical workshop is aimed at primary teachers and EYFS staff who want to use their school grounds and gardens to deliver the curriculum through real world learning throughout the year in all seasons. Many school and settings have some experience now of food growing, and are ready to take further steps. This course will encourage beginners and aim to stretch those with more experience.

Aim
To enable teachers to evaluate their growing gardens and extend their planning to include the whole site as a learning resource. Whether you have a small urban space or extensive grounds! We shall also discuss the role of parents and community support, and look at potential funding sources too.

Objectives
By the end of the day, teachers will:

  1. Understand the personal and educational benefits to be gained from learning outside and growing fruit and vegetables in school

  2. Be familiar with the basics of growing a range of (a) vegetables and (b) fruit suitable for school gardens

  3. Understand the use of a range of tools and equipment.

  4. Have the confidence to work with their children to plan, develop and maintain food-growing opportunities appropriate to their school. (Participants are asked to bring photos and plans of their grounds for discussion during the workshop)

  5. See the potential for delivering a wide range of curriculum topics outside.

  6. Have practical experience of, and take away a selection of ideas and activities that they can use with their children.

CPD Provider
Felicity Robinson is an accredited trainer and facilitator with over 20 years experience in schools working with children, staff and the community to develop schools grounds for learning, play and environmental sustainability. A landscape architect by profession she has specialised in education over the years and has a wealth of practical hands on experience to share.
PS …..We shall discuss organic pest control too!
